At the FIA press conference in Monza, Lando Norris was asked to comment in his own way on a curious event that happened this week: Max Verstappen received a new porcelain cup for winning the Hungarian Grand Prix, because the original was broken at the Hungaroring due to Lando’s careless actions. And now the McLaren driver has witnessed Max once again receiving his trophy.
Lando Norris: “There is not much to say here, although of course I did not act in the best way at the time. And it’s good that the race organizers and their partners fixed everything – it was nice to meet them again to somehow compensate for what I did back then.
If we talk about the coming weekend, I foresee difficulties. I’m not as sure of our car in the configuration prepared for Monza as I’d like. This is quite obvious, because everyone remembers the serious problems we had in the Spa.
But I think if we had had to talk to each other again on the Belgian circuit, we would have done better. After that race, we spent a lot of time and effort optimizing different versions of our car’s aerobody kit for low-pressure circuits.
Perhaps we are less confident in Monza than in Silverstone, Budapest or Zandvoort, but it is clear that we are now in a better position than in Spa, which is encouraging.
Of course we have done well in Monza in previous years, it was one of our best stages of the season and I hope we can repeat it.
Norris has a long-term contract with McLaren, but he was asked how he views one day becoming teammate Max Verstappen?
“Of course I will be ready for this in the future,” Lando replied. – I think I can happily say that Max is probably one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history. We never raced with him before F1, I always raced in the lower categories, but I knew him well from the days of karting.
I first met him in 2012 or 2013, and I got the chance to see how he works. It’s not just that he has a good car; he can show excellent results no matter what kind of car he has. He is able to perform at a consistently high level.
Perhaps the results will be slightly different, but at the same time it will work on the same level. I think it would be very interesting to work with such a rider. Then we’ll see what I can resist him – I’m open to such rivalry.
Recently I invited him to McLaren – if he ever wants to do that they will be happy to accept him there.
