Last week at Zandvoort, Fernando Alonso returned to the podium and finished second. Racer Aston Martin is not counting on such a result being repeated at Monza – Fernando told reporters on Thursday that according to his engineers’ calculations, this weekend’s battle for the podium behind Red Bull Racing will be between Williams and Ferrari.
Fernando Alonso: “They will be fast. Our calculations show that these two teams will outperform the rest this weekend. Williams has a very high top speed during the season, but Ferrari will also be fast. Like in Canada, Monza has long straights and chicanes, and in such conditions they are very fast.
I believe battling these two teams will be our main challenge this weekend. And they will compete with each other for the podium.”
Before the summer break, Aston Martin’s results took a turn for the worse. The team assured that this was due to technical innovations, but at Monza Fernando Alonso said he still does not have a full explanation of the reasons for what happened.
“I don’t know what caused the problems,” continues the world champion. “Sometimes we started a race weekend and realized that the car was not responding to our actions. I was uncomfortable in the corners and felt something was wrong with the car. We started to change the settings, added something, and in another aspect everything got worse.
I had to work on a fine line, but I was never completely happy with the car. In July this happened very often. Maybe it was the aero kit we used at the time. We had some thoughts at the time about what our difficulties might be related to, but there is still no clear explanation.”
