FIA and Extreme E to explore hydrogen technology

The FIA and the Extreme E Series have decided to join forces and organize a new off-road world championship, in which cars will be equipped with hydrogen-powered power plants. The Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed by both parties and can be regarded as the first step towards holding the first such series in motorsport history, with its debut season scheduled for 2025.

From the very beginning it will be held under the auspices of the federation, and already in 2026 it can receive the status of a World Cup – provided that it meets all the necessary criteria by then.

The new series will be called Extreme H (Hydrogen – hydrogen), work on the organization has started and it is planned to test a prototype racing SUV with a hydrogen power plant this year.

Mohammed bin SulayemFIA President: “We are very pleased to continue working with the Extreme E Series on its way to becoming a world championship. The use of renewable energy sources is one of the main objectives of the FIA and part of our long-term strategy. This series is a perfect example of this approach.

Hydrogen is an important part of this program and we are developing safety requirements for hydrogen-powered vehicles. These requirements are contained in the FIA International Sports Code.

When a series as popular as the Extreme E, with teams of well-known drivers, sees potential in hydrogen technology, it is encouraging. The series organizers’ approach to equality and diversity is in line with our vision as we strive to make motorsport accessible to all.

Motorsport competitions are an excellent platform for the development and development of new technologies, and in this regard the future series has enormous potential. As hydrogen technology is tested in the rigors of off-road competition in a wide variety of conditions, the entire automotive industry will benefit.”

Alejandro Agagfounder and CEO of Extreme E: “The organization, together with the FIA, of the first world championship in which hydrogen cars will compete is an important milestone for Extreme E and the new Extreme H series.

Years ago we started the conversation about extreme racing to showcase the incredible performance and innovative ideas of electric off-road vehicles, and now our series is growing rapidly and continues to push the very latest technologies. That’s why we are the first in the world to switch to hydrogen fuel and organize Extreme H.

Today’s announcement is the first major step towards the establishment of our championship and the implementation of revolutionary plans for the organization of racing in cars that will use hydrogen fuel.”
