Oscar Piastri has competed in the youth series at Monza, finished on the podium in F3 and won in F2, but now he will make his Italian Grand Prix debut in Formula 1. Speaking at the FIA press conference, Australian driver McLaren about his impressions associated with the classic Italian circuit.
Oscar Piastri: “I would say this circuit is not as technical as some of the others, but it has something special, different from everything else, especially on Saturday and Sunday.
It is important to take advantage of the slipstream during qualifying. I still have nightmarish memories of F3 when qualifying was stopped by red flags. At that time, the racers tried to get behind rivals’ cars – I hope everything will not be so bad now. Although the slipstream obviously plays an important role, also on Sunday.
But I really like the atmosphere in Monza, and on this track everything is fine with overtaking, so I’m already looking forward to the race.
If you remember the weekend in Zandvoort, I have to admit that I could have acted better in some situations there, including my accident during second practice, which didn’t contribute to good results. Of course, as we analyzed our actions, it became clear that some things needed to be changed, although given that both McLaren cars finished in the top ten, the result can be considered quite normal.
But you can always do more. The example of other riders and other teams showed that if you make the right decisions, you can earn a lot of points. Of course I learned some important lessons that will help me become a better professional, but the team also drew some conclusions.
