A day earlier, Lewis Hamilton extended his contract with Mercedes until the end of the 2025 season. Former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sport F1 commentator Martin Brundle believes he is driven by the desire to win the eighth title he missed in 2021 .
Martin Brundle: “I think he is motivated by the desire to take revenge on Max. Many believe that if he had won his eighth title in Abu Dhabi in 2021, he would have retired. I think he is aiming to leave the championship with eight titles or more.
Lewis is held in very high esteem and rightly values himself. He knows he has the speed, that he can make tens of millions plus bonuses. I believe Lewis and his team have been putting the finishing touches to the contract all along – in all matters, in the car, out of the car, off the track.
He wants to pull out all the stops on the track, with little to no team marketing or press.
Mercedes practically had to throw away the working car, for a year and a half they tried to make it work, but nothing came of it. Sometimes they show an incredible pace, but they don’t have a good, understandable platform. Then it all depends on what they get between January and March next year, and whether they return to the fray.
