At the Goodwood Festival of Speed today, Nigel Mansell is back behind the wheel of the Williams FW14B, the car that won its one and only championship in 1992.
First, the British F1 veteran drove the hill climb circuit, albeit at a moderate pace, simply greeting the crowd, then stopped outside Goodwood House, the main building of the estate, climbed onto the balcony and addressed the crowd, which had gathered with Mansell to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his achievement.
Nigel Mansell: “To be at Goodwood in my anniversary year is a huge honor for me, as I have not only seen this car again, but also driven it around the track. This is a special moment for the Williams team and for me.
I am very happy to meet the team again and it was great to be behind the wheel of this incredible race car again. When I rode it in front of an audience from all over the world, it was a memorable moment that I will cherish very much.”
Mansell’s career in Formula 1 lasted 15 years, during which he won 31 Grand Prix, was on the podium 59 times and became world champion in 1992 with Williams. And already in 1993 he won the title in the American CART IndyCar World Series.
1992 was the year of Williams’ dominance in Formula 1. Mansell and his team-mate Ricardo Patrese won 10 wins in 16 Grands Prix and started from pole position in 88% of the races.
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Williams Racing team represented four cars: in addition to the FW14B, it was the FW44, driven this season by Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi, as well as the championship FW18 Damon Hill and FW19 Jacques Villeneuve. But only the 1992 car went on the track.
