Zach Brown said his relationship with Daniel Ricciardo has never been better than it is now, although the head of McLaren Racing did not take his word for it, saying a month ago the Australian’s results fell short of expectations.
When asked if those comments affected his relationship with the rider, Brown replied: “Not at all. We have a great relationship, for example we had dinner together in London a few weeks ago. We laugh heartily at ordinary jokes, we like to work together at the races, so the relationship with Daniel has never been better.
As for that interview, when I was asked, I just gave an honest answer. I think Daniel says the same thing: you race to get closer to the leaders. We had great weekends, like last year in Monza, but there were also bad ones.
When we talk about our car, I don’t think we have been able to offer the riders a car that allows them to show good results on a regular basis, but we have to do it. So I’ve been honest about how things are going and that things could be better, but we are determined to work hard to improve the situation in the future.
I think in 2021 at Monza, when we had a fast car, we saw what Daniel and Lando Norris can do. So we need to focus on providing them with more efficient technology.
I think Daniel is doing well with motivation, and we fully support him.
