Laurent Rossi: Piastri is actively involved in the team’s work

Last year’s Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri is not racing this season and is serving as Alpine’s reserve driver. Team chief Laurent Rossi said the talented Aussie has an extensive testing program that goes beyond what reserve drivers normally do.

“Oscar has a busy testing schedule planned — many days of testing, many hours of simulation work,” said Laurent Rossi. “Normally we don’t have one driver do all the tests and all the time in the simulator, but we think Oscar can give us as much information about the simulator as the lead drivers. Yes, he still has a lot to learn, but he can also give us a lot.

He is also actively involved in briefings and information analysis. He’s evaluating other cars and race tracks, suggesting what kind of feedback the drivers can give to their teams, and stuff like that. Oscar is doing his part and you can rely on him.

In turn, we give him more access to information, allowing him to learn and gain experience. He is much more involved in the work of the team than the regular reserve manager.

For example, last year our reserve pilot did not necessarily participate in all the briefings and did not complete all the tests, did not spend much time on the simulator, but this is normal. Oscar does everything.

We have already compiled a list of Grand Prix where he could possibly participate on Friday practice. These are the circuits where the riders feel most comfortable, as they have already completed a million laps and skipping the first practice on Friday will have no effect. Or it could be stages where the stakes are not that high.”
