Former racing driver and now Sky Sports pundit Johnny Herbert believes the time is approaching when Aston Martin F1 owner Lawrence Stroll will have to make a difficult but necessary decision about his son Lance if he cares about the team’s best interests.
Stroll Jr. is in his sixth season in Formula 1 and has shown glimpses of racing talent in the past with three podium finishes, but the 23-year-old Canadian’s results now leave much to be desired.
Last year Lance was inferior to his team-mate Sebastian Vettel, and the same is happening this season: if the four-time world champion has 13 points, Stroll has only three. He explains this by saying that he is not comfortable driving an AMR22 car.
“I want to do better, but I don’t have faith in a car that doesn’t behave predictably and I feel like I can’t drive accurately enough,” Lance admitted over the Canadian weekend. “I have to keep working to get back to where I was last season and the year before, when I was more comfortable. Now I just have more difficulties, and together with my engineers I have to try to overcome them.”
However, Herbert doubts that Stroll will be able to make improvements.
“Lance has been having some issues lately,” he said. – Sometimes I think if his results don’t improve, there will come a time when Lawrence Stroll will have to say to his son, “I gave you a chance, but somehow it didn’t work out, and now we have to make a decision in the best interest of the team.”
There will come a time when this has to happen. I don’t know exactly when that moment will come, but it depends on Lance whether he can handle things the way he has to, and does so consistently. But so far it’s not going well.”
