Russell: Our team loves to overcome challenges

This weekend, George Russell will compete in the Goodwood Festival of Speed with Team Mercedes, driving the 2019 W10. He shared his impressions after the first race on Sunday.

George Russell: “Unfortunately I couldn’t spin the donuts at all because the engine overheated while we were waiting in line to get out on the track. So I just had to drive down the track to keep it from breaking. Hopefully we’ll be fine next run.

But we’re very happy to be part of the Festival of Speed, I see how many people are here, although it’s a shame I don’t hear how it supports us along the way. Still, it’s great to be back at Goodwood and meet the fans – it can be seen as a sort of warm-up for the race at Silverstone, which will take place in a week’s time.

When we talk about how the season is developing, our job is to use every situation as efficiently as possible. We can say that our team likes to overcome difficulties, and we dream that our car was the fastest, we dream of victories in races, but until now we have not been able to fight for it, because we still have not found a solution to solve the problems that hinder us.

I also enjoy the struggle and I am sure that when the period of difficulties is over, the taste of success will only be sweeter. Of course I’m looking forward to the British Grand Prix because every driver loves to be on this great track, and even in a country where the fans are so passionate about motorsport. And for me it will be a home race and I’m already looking forward to it with great impatience.”

It may be added that in the second race George was still able to spin donuts, although not much – probably the engine overheating problem still worried the team, but the crowd responded with understanding.

Immediately after Russell, 1992 World Champion Nigel Mansell drove around the track in the historic Williams car, and a friendly dialogue took place between two British Formula 1 drivers, one former and one of the most promising. George approached the FW14B Championship while Mansell was still in the cockpit, and they had a gleeful conversation about something touching in its own way. By the way, Big Nige won the title six years before George was born.
