Fernando Alonso: I had no speed on soft tyres

Aston Martin is disappointed with the qualifying results for the Italian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso, although he reached the final, only showed the tenth fastest time. His teammate Lance Stroll qualified last.

Fernando Alonso (10th): “Not our best qualifying, in which I showed the tenth fastest time. However, we managed to reach the final again, so I can fight for the points tomorrow.

Today we looked better in the first and second part, while in the final on soft tires I had no pace. According to today’s result, no points will be awarded and we will show our strengths on Sunday. Hopefully tomorrow will be an unusual race and we will try to take every opportunity.”

Lance walk (20th): “Difficult session – I just didn’t feel the grip of the tires on the track, so I couldn’t attack. Yesterday in practice 1 and 2 I didn’t do a single lap, which didn’t help either, but I don’t think that was the reason for today’s result. In the evening, the team will regroup – we will study the telemetry to understand what went wrong today.

Tomorrow will be a tough race. There is still a lot of work ahead of me, but I will be ready for anything that comes our way.”

Mike Crack, Team boss: “Difficult qualifying, with the result below expectations. You have to understand why Fernando couldn’t improve on soft tires – this kept him from fighting for high positions in the final.

Lance struggled to get traction on hard tires. Yesterday he lost a lot of time, which affected his preparation. We’ll have to trade off the beaten track to help Lance regain positions tomorrow, and to some extent we’re willing to rely on fate.

It will be a long race and tomorrow we will do our best to earn some points and keep the losses to a minimum.”
