Lawson: There was still a chance to reach the final

Yuki Tsunoda apologized to the AlphaTauri team for not reaching the final of qualifying in Monza – he was just 0.013 seconds short. But for Liam Lawson, the twelfth result is quite an achievement, as he made his debut in Formula 1 just a week ago.

Yuki Tsunoda (11th): “I’m pretty upset because I think the lap could have been better. But still we did well, because yesterday in practice we were hampered by numerous difficulties, but today we managed to take a big step forward.

We made a lot of changes to the car setup and it all worked, but I can only apologize to the team because the speed of the AT04 allowed me to go into the final session. But the start from 11th position and the car’s capabilities give reason to hope that we can fight for the points in tomorrow’s race.

The car can set a good pace on long sets of circles, but for this you need to put everything together.

Liam Lawson (12th): “Qualifying went well, I think we gradually picked up the pace every day of the weekend and every session, that’s good. It was important for me to get used to the car and to feel what I was really capable of behind the wheel. We were both just a bit short to reach the third session, but I think we still had such a chance.

Unfortunately, Fernando Alonso was right in front of me on a fast lap and was carried off the track, leaving gravel on the pavement. Be that as it may, the results are very compact, and I am happy if only because we are making progress.

I hope the car is fast enough tomorrow so we can fight for the points. I think I still have a lot to learn as the race progresses, but obviously we are starting from very good positions, so we will try to fight for positions in the top ten.”
