George Russell was ahead of his teammate in qualifying – the score in this pair was 5:5, but Lewis is calm about that.
George Russell (4th): “Fourth place is our maximum for today. Having driven a little faster I would have gone into the gravel, it was impossible to regain three-tenths of the lead from pole position.
Today we were again convinced of how important the tires are – in the first session I was 13th and in the last fourth, and during this time only the rubber compounds have changed.
We knew we would have some problems at Monza because of the low downforce setup of the cars, but I’m starting on the second row of the grid – not too bad. We need to have good race pace and a little bit of tire wear. Overtaking is not easy with such thin rear wings. Even with DRS activated, you only gain back one or two tenths, so we have to work perfectly on the pit stops.
Lewis Hamilton (8e): “We are all about the same speed. I’m impressed with how fast the Williams cars are here; it’s not easy to get ahead of them and McLaren.
George did a great job today and tomorrow I have to find a chance to get my money back. Williams cars are the fastest on the straights, it is almost impossible to overtake them, but if there is a desire, a way can be found.
