Alex Palou became IndyCar champion for the second time

Alex Palou won the Portland Grand Prix with his fifth win of the season, securing the IndyCar Series title ahead of schedule. In 2021, the Spanish rider of the Chip Ganassi Racing team has already become champion and is now repeating this feat.

By the way, for the first time in a long time, the fate of the title was decided precisely at the penultimate stage of the season – before that it was so in 2007, when Sebastien Bourdais became the champion of IndyCar.

“That’s exactly what we wanted,” said 26-year-old Alex happily after the finish. – The weekend as a whole was incredibly successful. Our team had very fast cars, we knew we were going to fight for the win and we just raced like we’ve been doing all season. I am very proud to have won both this race and the second title.

I never thought I would become an IndyCar champion, and to become a two-time champion is just amazing, it’s like a dream!”

Chip Ganassi’s team rider has already won the title for the 15th time in the history of the American series – more such achievements can only be attributed to Team Penske, which has won this championship 17 times on different occasions.

Second place in the individual standings was taken by another Chip Ganassi Racing driver, Scott Dixon, who took third place in Portland. Arrow McLaren driver Felix Rosenquist finished second in Portland.

According to the results of qualifying, Palou started from 5th position, but already in the first corner he was ahead of Dixon and Colton Herta, which allowed him to rise to 3rd position, and later the correct tactics chosen by the team allowed him take the lead and Alex led 69 of the race’s 110 laps, which took place on a road circuit.

The season finale in IndyCar will be held in one week at California Motor Speedway in Monterey.
