Liam Lawson replaced the injured Daniel Ricciardo in AlphaTauri, having already raced two Grands Prix in which he didn’t seem like an obvious outsider.
The 21-year-old New Zealander is racing in the Japanese Super Formula Series this year and finishes second with two races to go. On Servus TV, Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko said Liam could be in Formula 1 next year.
Helmut Marko: “We have been working with Liam for a while now. He is a tough but smart opponent, a bit like Bruce McLaren. There is certainly a great future ahead of him. In Monza he was fast, which is a good sign.
This year he takes part in the Japanese series, where he takes second place in a very difficult and intense fight. The cars there are faster than in Formula 2, but since the races are held in Japan, these successes are hardly noticeable here. Maybe he will win the title.
Will Lawson get a first-class pilot seat instead of a test pilot contract next year? A decision can be made very quickly.”
