Formula 1 will not be easy to refuse Andretti Global

It is very likely that the Andretti Global project has already received approval from the FIA - according to well-informed sources, the application for the organization of a new Formula 1 team submitted by the US side has finally been approved, and we have this stated.

But this does not at all mean that all major difficulties are behind us. If what the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport reported the day before is true, then Michael Andretti and his partners can be congratulated on their first victory, but many new, no less serious tests await them.

Formula 1 is still not convinced that the arrival of an eleventh team will bring measurable commercial benefits to the World Championship, and that Andretti Global’s intention is not to profitably sell the franchise to anyone else in the foreseeable future.

An interesting legal point is that if the application is approved by the FIA, the leadership of Formula 1 will not be able to refuse Andretti Global so easily, this will require more than strong arguments.

In 2000, the European Commission forced the FIA to change all of the federation’s fundamental documents on participation in motorsport competitions. The bottom line is that it is only possible for security reasons or for formal legal reasons to deny potential applicants the right to go to the start.

In the case of the Andretti project, the unwillingness of Formula 1 and the championship participants to share the prize money with the future team can hardly be compensated for these reasons. In addition, the project received the support of Cadillac, a company with a worldwide reputation, which is part of the General Motors Corporation. There is a risk that the FIA and Formula 1 will face legal action if refused, and this will inevitably entail very serious costs.

But even if Andretti manages to overcome the skepticism of the organizers and the resistance of the traditional World Cup participants, the new team will inevitably run into chronic time problems, as the American squad planned to debut in the championship as early as 2025. .

Even if the model follows the model tested by the Haas F1, choosing Alpine as a partner, and 70% of the car’s parts are made in Europe, it is simply impossible to organize all this normally in just over a year .

General Motors has announced plans to create its own engine, but it will take several years. Audi has been developing a hybrid power plant for Formula 1 for some time, has linked considerable forces to this and will not have time until 2026. Therefore, a more realistic scenario is to buy finished engines from Renault and label them as Cadillac.

But French power plants are still noticeably inferior to the competition in terms of efficiency, and in the case of customer engines, the problem is usually exacerbated by chassis flaws. At the same time, in Formula 1, they mainly fear that the Andretti team will simply not be competitive, if only because the project is being implemented in an extremely short time.

Theoretically, in Formula 1 they can deliberately postpone the handling of the ‘Andretti Global case’ until a new Consent Agreement is concluded. And while discussing this document, the championship participants and organizers may agree to increase the fee charged from new teams from $200 to $600 million. And this, in turn, can become a serious obstacle to the implementation of any new project. , even though it is backed by a major car group.

However, there is still no official confirmation that Andretti’s application has been approved by the FIA.
