Palou does not believe he will get the chance to move to Formula 1

Alex Palou became champion of the IndyCar series for the second time, ahead of schedule, one stage before the end of the season, winning the title, and we talked about it. But in the 26-year-old Spaniard’s life there seem to be more difficulties than on the racetracks, as McLaren Racing sued him for breach of contract.

Against this background, Alex is very hesitant about his chances of getting into Formula 1.

“When I won the IndyCar title in 2021, I had the opportunity to work with the McLaren team on tests behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. Then I didn’t rule out having a chance in this championship,” Palou told the Spanish edition of SoyMotor. But I’ve always told myself that I’m not just interested in Formula 1, and I’m not willing to pay any price just to get there.

I understand that this is the premier league of motorsport, where the strongest teams and well-known car brands compete, and of course I would like to compete in Formula 1 if the opportunity arises.

But in America I have excellent chances to succeed, and I don’t want to give them up completely. We made an attempt to break into F1, I’ve driven these cars and I think I did well, but no opportunities opened up for me.

I still couldn’t do more than I did and I don’t think I’ll get another chance as time goes on and will gradually become unsuitable for Formula 1 in terms of age. I’ll wait a little longer. In the meantime I will try to get as many wins as possible in IndyCar.

There will be a chance to go to F1, we will be happy. If not, that’s fine too, I’ll keep fighting for race wins and IndyCar titles. But next year I’ll be 27 years old, so I’m not looking forward to another chance. Maybe time has already passed.”
