The Goodwood Festival of Historic Racing Technology takes place Friday through Sunday, with Jenson Button participating.
Which cars he will have to perform there, we have already told. In an interview with the festival’s press office, he admitted that he had never driven his unique Jaguar C-Type on the circuit. This car was once owned by Juan Manuel Fangio, the legendary Argentine racer, five-time world champion.
“The car is mine, but I actually drove it in race mode, although I have to participate in qualifying right away today. But I brought Alex Buncombe, who has experience driving this Jaguar. You drove it to Monaco, didn’t you?’ – Jenson asked cheerfully to his old friend.
“I have driven it in many places, but the last time was exactly ten years ago,” he replied. – But it turned out that I won the historic race in Monaco twice, as well as the Le Mans Classic and the race at Silverstone. It will be interesting to get behind the wheel of this car again.
I just explained to Jenson how the car behaves on the track, and also some things to keep in mind. Obviously this is not an ideal situation if he has to take part in qualifying right away, but he can handle it.
After a few laps you get used to this level of grip, so it’s easy. You just have to choose the right braking points, but I have no doubt that he will succeed.”
“Yes, it’s very simple, no pressure! Button laughed. – Of course driving such vehicles is another story, but this year I have only driven cars that have no downforce. I’ve driven stock cars at Le Mans and in the NASCAR series and after that the feeling of driving a Jaguar C-Type should come more naturally to me when going through corners with a slight skid.
Coming to Goodwood Revival is always exciting, and I think a lot of riders who are used to driving equipment that grips the track very well, when they step onto machines like this here, experience something of a shock at first. But it’s so much fun!
In Formula 1 we don’t skid in corners, so I’m already looking forward to how great it will be!”
Alex Buncombe was right: Jenson won pole, and this particular Jaguar C-Type’s lack of flying experience didn’t stop him.
