Silverstone honors Frank Williams

Silverstone is preparing to honor the memory of Sir Frank Williams: Historic Williams FW07s will be on display in the track’s paddock during the days of the Silverstone Classic festival in August. In such cars, Alan Jones and Clay Regazzoni won five races in 1979.

It was at Silverstone on 14 July 1979 that Regazzoni took Williams’ first win, and in all there are 114 such achievements in its history – only Ferrari and McLaren have more. In addition, three years ago Sir Frank celebrated a unique anniversary on this circuit: 50 years at the head of the Formula 1 team.

Williams racers won seven more times at Silverstone: in 1980 Jones did, in 1987, 1991 and 1992 – Nigel Mansell, in 1993 – Alain Prost, in 1994 – Damon Hill, in 1996 -m – Jacques Villeneuve.

Williams cars with classic Ford Cosworth DFV engines, built in the late 1970s and early 1980s, still participate in historic car races and sometimes win. In honor of the team’s sporting achievements, the two Masters Racing Legends races taking place at Silverstone from August 26-28 will be named after Sir Frank: the Frank Williams Memorial Cup.

In addition, two Williams Heritage FW07s will be on display in the Silverstone paddock, as discussed above.

Although the Williams family no longer owns the Formula 1 team, having sold it to the American investment fund Dorilton Capital, Frank Williams’ heirs are pleased that their father is remembered in the world of motorsport: “For many reasons, Silverstone is a special place for our father so we think it is very appropriate that there will be a celebration dedicated to his exceptional achievements during the days of the Silverstone Classic summer festival.

Everyone knows that his father has always been a real racer and this passion became the driving force, through which he experienced a real hardening both in times of success and in less favorable periods. His passion for Formula 1 will always be remembered at Silverstone and we are confident that part of it lives on with an event like the Silverstone Classic.”

By the way, the audience visiting this festival will see not only the racing technology of a bygone era, but also more modern ones: all seven cars with which Lewis Hamilton won his titles from 2008 to 2020 are shown there for the first time.
