Roman Grosjean, a former Formula 1 driver now playing in the US IndyCar series, believes Max Verstappen has been given the most favored treatment at Red Bull Racing and Sergio Perez will not get a chance to fight for the title.
The Mexican won in Monaco last month, confirming that he can already compete with Verstappen, but Grosjean has no doubts that the team intends to help Max win the championship for the second time in a row.
When the French rider was asked if Perez could seriously compete with his partner, Grosjean replied: “No. Max is driver #1 and Sergio is #2. Red Bull has always followed this approach and during the races they warn Perez over the radio not to fight Verstappen.
So it was even in Baku where he led the race – why didn’t he fight to stay in first position? So everything is clear at Red Bull, but we have to pay tribute to Max – he does an excellent job with the tasks that the team gives him. Therefore, we can say that the priority status is normal.”
In the first nine races of the season, Verstappen took six wins and Perez just one, placing him second in the individual standings and already 46 points behind his partner.
In the past, Red Bull really did use team tactics more than once, especially when Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber played for the team. Many remember the controversial episode that took place at the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix when Vettel did not follow instructions, overtook his partner and won the race.
Webber was then simply furious and Vettel’s actions caused a wide resonance, and then the Australian remembered this story for a long time.
The recurrence of such situations in 2022 has not yet been achieved, but it seems that Perez is not too happy with what is happening. However, he will have to play for Red Bull Racing for a long time to come, so it is not in his interest to worsen relations with a partner and with team management.
