This weekend, Sir Jackie Stewart, three-time world champion, once again got behind the wheel of a Tyrrell 006 with a classic Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine – in this car the legendary Scottish racer won the title for the third time in half a century ago, in 1973 .
The car had a restless character, it was very difficult to drive it to the limit; due to the short wheelbase, the behavior of the Tyrrell 006 on the track was very nervous and Stewart needed all his skills to tame it.
He received this car in the third stage of the season and immediately won the Grand Prix of South Africa, held at the Kyalami circuit. Four more victories followed – in Zolder, Monaco, Zandvoort and at the Nürburgring. After winning the German Grand Prix, Stewart reached the top of the podium in Formula 1 for the 27th time. This record for the number of victories lasted for 14 years – only in 1987 was it broken by Alain Prost.
Jackie Stewart has special memories of the Goodwood circuit: it was here that the event that determined his career in motorsport took place. In 1964 he took part in tests there, driving a Formula 3 car for the Tyrrell team and on the same day the already experienced Bruce McLaren drove at Goodwood. Jackie consistently showed better results than the New Zealand driver, the future founder of the McLaren team. As a result, Ken Tyrrell offered Jackie a contract and the rest is history.
And today, when the public sees Sir Jackie behind the wheel of his Tyrrell at Goodwood for the Goodwood Revival, they literally feel the breath of motorsport history. By the way, they say that even now, at the age of 84, he drove a lap at completely normal speed – Jackie Stewart knows no other way.
