Martin Poole is Nico Hulkenberg’s coach and physiotherapist; he has been working with the German racer for many years and before the Singapore Grand Prix he talked about the features of the preparation for this stage of the championship.
Martin Poole: “We started thinking about preparing for Singapore at the beginning of the summer holidays, during which Nico trained a lot in heat and high humidity – all this has its effect.
The Singapore Grand Prix is a unique race, so we have increased aerobic exercises and tried to improve adaptation to high temperatures and severe discomfort associated with the feeling of fatigue that occurs in hot conditions.
Already on the track, before each session we will make great efforts to lower the body temperature in advance – for this we use cooling vests, frozen towels and cold drinks. After each session, Nico takes an ice bath to quickly lower his body temperature, allowing for a faster recovery. Normally he loses 1.5 to 2 kg of weight during this race.”
