Zac Brown was at the IndyCar season finale at Laguna Seca this weekend, where he said he does not expect Alex Palou to appear in Singapore, even though the Spaniard still has contractual obligations with McLaren, and is formally listed as the reserve driver for the team.
We quoted these words yesterday from the executive director of McLaren Racing, but now The Race quotes Palou as confirmation that he does not intend to go to the Formula 1 races this year.
“First of all, I can’t be in Singapore just because I won the title and we’re going to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony,” said the now two-time IndyCar champion. – And then the tests of the 2024 car begin. So yes, the plans have changed. I don’t go to Formula 1 races.
To be honest, we don’t really hang out with Zac Brown. We have nothing to talk about right now, and I don’t think I can tell him anything useful. But personally I have no problem with him, and when I see him I don’t run away or cross to the other side of the street. But now we have nothing to talk about.”
McLaren Racing has already sued Palou for breach of contract. The team has also not yet confirmed who will serve as reserve driver during the Singapore Grand Prix. There was speculation that it could be Pato O’Ward, who drives in IndyCar for Arrow McLaren, but that depended on the results of the Laguna Seca race.
Success in the season finale gave the Mexican a chance to score enough points to qualify for an FIA Super License, but he only finished 9th. According to Zac Brown: “We have had several reserve drivers this year and that will continue.”
