In August, Felipe Massa formally notified the FIA and Formula 1 of his intention to take legal action over their collusion and inaction during the 2008 season following Nelson Piquet Jr.’s accident. Bernardo Viana, one of the former driver’s lawyers, said Massa had not yet made the case official as he had agreed to give Formula 1 and the FIA until mid-October to respond to the claims and settle the case out of court.
“The ball is in their court, we are waiting for a response from Formula 1 and the FIA,” says Viana. “They asked for more time to study, until mid-October, and we graciously agreed.”
Bernardo Viana added that he is counting on the support of Lewis Hamilton and hopes that the Mercedes driver will speak alongside Felipe Massa in court.
“Lewis is an important ambassador for the sport, who has always been an advocate of sporting integrity,” Viana continues. “He is an honorary citizen of Brazil, he is very loved by Brazilians and I hope he will support us.” We have nothing against Hamilton.”
