Nico Hulkenberg loves the Singapore round of the championship, even though it is one of the toughest races of the season, but according to the Haas F1 driver, the quality of physical fitness is tested here.
Q: What’s so attractive about Singapore, and what makes the upcoming Grand Prix one of the most exciting events of the season?
Nico Hulkenberg: Singapore is a beautiful city and this race has become very important for the Formula 1 calendar. Everyone is happy to be there, and personally I really like this phase of the championship. The evening races have now become a permanent part of the calendar, but Singapore was the first, which makes it even more exciting.
Q: It is believed that the race on the Marina Bay circuit is the most difficult in terms of physical activity. There are many factors: heat and humidity, unexpected weather changes and, in general, the need to adapt to a race that takes place in the dark. What additional difficulties does this pose during the preparation and acclimatization process?
Nico Hulkenberg: In Singapore we follow a European work schedule, so acclimatization does not pose any particular problems. We arrive at the track in the afternoon and leave around midnight, but even at this time it is still warm there.
I train intensively because in Singapore you really understand why you have to put in so much effort and spend so much time on physical training.
Question: Certain changes have taken place on the circuit and instead of the section from turns 16 to 19, as it was in 2022, there is now a straight line of 397.9 meters long. Therefore, the number of turns has been reduced from 23 to 19. What can you say about these changes, and how will the appearance of a new straight line affect working with the VF-23 settings?
Nico Hulkenberg: These changes allow us to complete faster laps, but of course the track is still difficult. There it is necessary to maintain full concentration, but until we start training it is difficult to estimate how competitive we will be.
