The race in Singapore will not be easy for Pirelli, but the tire makers are looking forward to it with optimism…
Mario IsolaPirelli: “The final part of this long season, which has taken Formula 1 across three continents and sixteen time zones, starts this weekend in Singapore. This was once the first stage under artificial light, but there are now several more on the calendar.
Technically, Marina Bay is a typical street circuit: winding with many bends, many of them 90 degrees. A small mistake can be costly, and the configuration means a high level of downforce.
This year the circuit has changed due to construction work in the Marina Bay area – the section where turns 16-19 used to be is now a 400 meter straight. The circuit should become faster as the overall lap length has been shortened and the layout has become smoother. We’ll see if this affects the strategy, as in theory it could increase overtaking opportunities.
This circuit is not particularly taxing on the tires, but the rear tires must be carefully controlled during the acceleration phase when exiting slow corners. Temperatures tend to be consistently high as Singapore is only 150 kilometers from the equator, increasing the risk of overheating.”
