The Singapore Grand Prix will be Liam Lawson’s third race with AlphaTauri, replacing the injured Daniel Ricciardo, but the young New Zealander appears to be doing well and making a very good impression on the team.
He has not yet raced on the challenging Marina Bay city circuit, but he is rationally minded heading into his third weekend in Formula 1.
Liam Lawson: “So far everything is going well, but this weekend it is important to adapt very quickly and learn a lot. In Monza it was a little easier because I know the Italian circuit, but here for the first time and I’m just looking forward to getting to know Marina Bay.
If we talk about the difficulties that need to be overcome, it is impossible to name the most important ones, but probably the most effort should be made to find the right approach to the car. I am adapting gradually, but there are many different tasks, including learning to work with tires of different compositions and types. For example, in Zandvoort I rode on intermediate tires for the first time, because I had never had such experience before.
I have loved the Singapore race since I was a kid, probably because it took place at night under floodlights. I raced it all the time, played on the computer, and when I was seven years old my father promised to take me to this Grand Prix every year, but that didn’t work out. But this weekend he’s finally coming here – in fact, I brought him here, so this time my parents decided to go to Singapore after all.
In preparation for this race, I did a lot of laps on the simulator and also spent a lot of time doing endurance training in hot conditions, wearing a lot of warm clothes, etc. Overall, we tried to prepare as best as possible.
If we talk about further prospects for cooperation with the team, then decisions will be made before each specific race, and then we will see. I believe I will prepare normally for the Japanese leg, but I would say I have already got the hang of it. I absolutely love competing in these races and I don’t think I could be satisfied with anything less in the future. ”
