At the FIA press conference in Singapore, George Russell shared his thoughts on the new configuration of the Marina Bay circuit, which has lost four corners. The Mercedes driver thinks that qualifying will not be that much fun to drive now, but the task will become a little easier on Sunday.
George Russell: “I think the changes will make the race even more exciting, although the Singapore circuit is always interesting to drive, but it is quite difficult. Historically, the opportunity to overtake here was only in Turn 5, but now we can hope that there will be opportunities for that in the new Turn 16 as well.
Since this is the longest race of the season in terms of duration, we can also hope that it will now be a bit easier for us physically, because now we will get to the finish a little faster: this year the lap time will be reduced by about 9 seconds. We’ll see how everything turns out in reality, but I’ll say this: qualifying won’t be as fun, but Sunday’s race should be better.
Last year in Singapore we had a pretty fast car, but unfortunately we couldn’t fully utilize its potential. But now there is a very intense rivalry between us, Ferrari, Aston Martin and McLaren, and the results vary from weekend to weekend. We hope that we can get a little closer to Red Bull on this track, which requires a lot of downforce.
There is competition between the teams for second place in the Constructors’ Championship, and here everything depends on the nuances, but the results promise to be very tight.”
