Formula 1 teams have responded to insulting statements by three-time world champion Nelson Piquet Sr. against Lewis Hamilton. At the time of this article’s publication, the press office of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alpine and McLaren have issued statements of support for the Mercedes driver.
“We support Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes in their fight against discrimination of any kind,” Ferrari said in a statement.
“McLaren Racing supports Lewis Hamilton and Formula 1,” writes the British team’s press service. “Racism must be banned from sport, and it is our shared responsibility to unite and eradicate it.”
“We’re on your side. Racism has no place in our sport or anywhere else,” Alpine wrote.
The Aston Martin team released the following statement: “We support Lewis Hamilton and all those around the world who suffer from racism or discrimination of any kind. This disgusting behavior has no place in our sport or in society.”
Interestingly, Red Bull Racing decided not to comment on the words of Pique Sr., whose daughter Max Verstappen is dating. This was announced by British correspondent Chris Medland, citing the words of a team representative during the morning presentation of the new RB17 hypercar.
In addition, according to Medland, Formula 1 is considering the possibility of sanctions against Nelson Piquet Sr., but it is not yet clear which ones. The former driver has not been coming to the Formula 1 stages for a number of years and before that he visited the paddock as a guest.
