Fernando Alonso reached the final qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix, where he posted the seventh fastest time. His Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll crashed his car seriously but escaped injury and will start last in the race.
Fernando Alonso (7th): “I’m glad Lance is doing well. I rode a good lap in the final. I told the team on the radio that it would be difficult to beat the time even if I kept trying all night!
In the third practice we had some problems: we didn’t look competitive enough, so we changed a lot of the car to improve our qualifying performance. This probably wasn’t enough.
Tomorrow there is a long but interesting race on the program. It is necessary to maximize every opportunity, but at the same time remain realistic – there are many fast cars ahead and we are not in our usual positions. I will try to make up a few places, but it will be a tough race.”
Lance walk (20th): “It’s going well, but I’m angry because there’s still a lot of work to do – in the pits and on the track.
In qualifying the car had no grip. The lap out of the pits for the final attempt was bad due to traffic. I started the lap a few seconds behind Pierre Gasly, so it didn’t go as we planned.
When I realized that I wasn’t improving my result, I started attacking with all my strength in the last corner in an attempt to make up extra time – and that’s when everything went wrong. Let’s see what we can do in tomorrow’s race.”
