McLaren has confirmed that Pato O’Ward will train in the MCL60 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In addition, the Mexican driver, who competes in IndyCar for Arrow McLaren and finished 4th in the individual championship a week ago, will also start testing at the Yas Marina circuit after the season.
During the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year, O’Ward drove a McLaren car for the first time in practice, replacing Lando Norris. He is also part of the team’s driver training program and has extensive experience driving the older car, the MCL35, in private testing.
Every Formula 1 team must give its rookies at least two training sessions per season, and the first of these was formally Oscar Piastri when he made his debut for McLaren in Bahrain.
The second driver would be Alex Palou, who until recently was a reserve driver, but now not only have his paths with the team diverged, but McLaren Racing has already sued the Spaniard for breach of contractual obligations. And now it has been decided that Pato O’Ward will pilot the MCL60.
