George Russell took second place in qualifying in Singapore and hopes he can stay ahead of Ferrari in the race as the Mercedes team has a tactical advantage.
George Russell (2nd): “It’s so hot there! A very difficult session, because as soon as you get into the car, you immediately feel like you are in a sauna. You sweat, but you have to concentrate on driving and staying calm.
But this weekend I am absolutely confident in our car, and the team has done a great job and used the right tactics. Compared to everyone else we managed to save a set of Medium tires for tomorrow’s race. No one else has an extra set.
It’s great to make it to the final round of qualifying and come into the race with a tactical advantage on the front row!
This year the track in Singapore has a slightly different configuration, but on Friday during practice we saw that everything was very bad with the degradation of the tires, so when choosing the tactics we will have to choose between one and two pit stops. The difference between the two schemes is very small, but because we have the extra Medium kit we can put Ferrari in a difficult position and try to force them to make mistakes.
Our job is to stay ahead of Ferrari, we don’t need anything else!”
Lewis Hamilton (5th): “Today the car behaved very well, just like yesterday. We were confident that we could challenge Ferrari. One of our riders was able to accomplish this task, but I was not. The adjustments made overnight helped him, but hindered me. That’s why I didn’t have enough speed on Saturday.
Today I am angry, but tomorrow is another day. I really hope George has a great start and can put pressure on Ferrari. It would be great if he wins.”
