Lewis Hamilton: Carlos and Lando’s strategy worked

Lewis Hamilton finished third in Singapore and reached the podium for the fifth time this season. This result allowed Mercedes driver Fernando Alonso to stay ahead of the battle for third place in the individual classification.

Lewis’ teammate George Russell crashed the car on the final lap, hitting the wall with the right rear wheel under braking.

Lewis Hamilton (3rd): “My congratulations to Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris. They performed well today and their strategy worked.

This weekend we took a different approach and qualified with a different number of sets of tires to be able to do what we did today. I thought we would have a two-stop strategy and the team did a fantastic job getting us back into contention.

Too bad this happened in the first corner at the start, but I stayed calm and kept attacking. It’s a shame for George; he and I did our best to catch up with the leaders, but our tires overheated. I know he will win back. He had a phenomenal weekend.”

George Russell (16th): “To be honest, I have no words. A very intense, physically challenging race. It proved difficult to maintain maximum concentration for so long. Carlos did a great job of not allowing us to use an alternative strategy.

I think we would have been within a meter of winning if I had passed Lando when I had the chance. But due to a short-term loss of concentration in the last lap, I even dropped out of the top ten. My apologies to the team. On this circuit any mistake can be costly. I feel like I let myself and the team down.”
