On the eve of the Japanese Grand Prix, Mercedes director Toto Wolff summarized the results of the Singapore race and outlined the team’s tasks on the Suzuka stage.
Toto Wolff: “We saw a spectacular Sunday evening in Singapore. Although the result was not quite what we had hoped for, there were many positives from the last race. The team’s strategy was bold and aggressive, and the car’s pace was high all weekend. The team performed well and gave the riders a chance to win.
Lewis Hamilton drove well and reached the podium. He showed impressive pace throughout the race, especially in the final stretch. Third place was well deserved.
George Russell was clear all weekend and gave his best to win – that’s exactly the approach we like to see. In the last lap he made a small mistake, which hurt him even more. I know he will recover.
There will be another race in a few days. The Japanese stage is unique because of its passionate local fans. The track is incredibly challenging and the racers enjoy racing on it. In Singapore the differences were minimal, so our aim is to perform at a competitive level in Suzuka.
In the last race we lost points against Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, and now we want to win back. The team is focused on getting the most out of the car and earning as many points as possible. If we succeed, I am sure we will increase our lead.”
