Before the Japanese Grand Prix, McLaren announced the extension of the contract with Oscar Piastri: the Australian driver will remain with the team until the end of 2026.
During the collaboration, which started at the end of 2022, Oscar has repeatedly pleased the team with both his work attitude and his results, the best of which was second place in the Saturday sprint in Spa. Even during his time in the youth series, he had a very impressive list of achievements: Piastri won consecutive titles in the Renault Formula Cup (2019), Formula 3 (2020) and Formula 2 (2021).
Because Lando Norris has a contract with McLaren until the end of 2025, the team composition will remain unchanged for the next two seasons.
Andrea Stella, team manager: “We are very pleased to confirm that Oscar has agreed to extend his contract with the team for several years. We really appreciate this driver, he regularly impresses us with his results and his attitude, so it was not difficult for us to make such a decision.
Oscar has proven himself to be an important member of the team and it is great that he believes in McLaren that we can challenge for championship victories again in the future. I really look forward to seeing him grow and develop with us as we continue this partnership.”
Zac Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing: “It’s great that we will continue to work with Oscar until the end of 2026. He is an incredibly talented driver and a valuable asset to our team, so it’s great that we will continue to work together in the long term.
Oscar is already showing what he is capable of on track, and the fact that we have managed to improve dramatically as the season progresses was his most important contribution. He is a perfect fit for the team and is respected and valued within the McLaren Racing family. I am very happy to see his professional growth continue.”
Oscar Piastri: “I am pleased that our partnership with McLaren will continue for many years to come. I want to fight for victories with this team and it’s great that the foundation for this is already being laid.
Thanks to the warmth with which I was received here and the relationships already built up, I feel at home. I really appreciate the trust placed in me: since the team aims to maintain our relationship for a long time, it was easy to make a decision. When you feel appreciated and believed, even though you’re just over half the way through the season, that says a lot.
Since last year’s youth test in Abu Dhabi, I really feel part of McLaren and thank everyone in the team, as well as all our fans.
Stability at such an early stage in my career is a very important advantage, especially when a prestigious brand like McLaren offers it, and this makes it possible to continue what I started.”
