In Singapore, Esteban Ocon withdrew from the race due to technical problems with the transmission, so in Japan he wants to make up for his previous failure and hopes that the speed of the Alpine car will allow this.
Esteban Ocon: “I am no more concerned about the reliability of the car than I was then, but unfortunately such problems do occur in motorsport. But in Singapore we were especially upset because we could have earned a lot of points. On race day the car seemed to come to life and we were able to drive very fast. But it all ended in a premature exit, and even on my birthday, which was unpleasant.
But now we’re in Suzuka, and I really love this song. Last year I had an interesting duel with Lewis Hamilton here and finished fourth. Normally in Japan we manage to perform very well, so I hope we can repeat that now.
In Singapore the team presented a number of technical innovations, which allowed us to significantly improve compared to Monza, where conditions were extremely unfortunate for us. But last weekend we were much more competitive and during the Grand Prix we were able to overtake our rivals quite a bit, which was even somewhat unexpected. So the new products work quite effectively, and we have to keep working hard.
I attended a fan festival in Tokyo and it was simply incredible! I felt the warmest support, saw many French flags and received a lot of gifts for my birthday. And I showed the fans a special version of the helmet design that I will be wearing this weekend, because Japan has a special place in my heart and always will!”
