Alonso: We must increase the pace of car modernization

In the final stage in Singapore, Fernando Alonso did not earn any points for the first time this season. In Suzuka, the Aston Martin driver said his car lost its aerodynamic suspension in the early laps of the race, leading to a loss of lap time.

Fernando Alonso: “The lack of a fairing didn’t help. We know what speed loss this has led to, but we will not disclose this. But the loss was significant, so after the news came out, I’m not too worried about our speed in Singapore.

The pace wasn’t good, but without the loss of the fairing I could have been close behind the leaders and had less problems with Alpine and Sergio Perez. But if you are not fast enough, many problems arise.

At the beginning of the year we had a fast car, but even then we said we would face problems as the season progressed because our main rivals are leading teams with huge bases. Ferrari and Mercedes were expected to improve and possibly lead the way.

Mercedes didn’t take much time to do this, Ferrari spent more and McLaren is now very strong. We must accept the current balance of power and improve our efficiency off the track. Next year the pace of car modernization should be faster, but we should not forget that in fact we have a new team, which for the first time found itself in a similar situation. The new base should help to quickly modernize the car during the season.

This does not mean that we accept the current situation and consider it normal, but we do know that we have a lot to learn in various areas this season.”

Asked if he was disappointed by the drop in the team’s results, Fernando said: “Not at all. I am very happy with our project and after the difficult races in Monza and Singapore the team had very productive debriefings – these are the weekends where we learn the most. The steps we are planning next year when we come to these races are huge. I have never seen such a scale of ideas and proposals.

Everyone is motivated to become a leading team and we have the necessary resources and determination to do that. So I’m very happy.”
