Lando Norris congratulated Oscar Piastri on signing a long-term contract with McLaren, but at the same time cheerfully admitted that he doesn’t like how much pressure his Australian teammate is putting on him.
Lando Norris: “Of course I congratulate Oscar! A contract that allows you to stay in Formula 1 for a long time is always good. Oscar is performing well and has done everything asked of him, although I think he has already exceeded many people’s expectations this season.
He really pushes me, and I can’t say I like it! It’s not what I would want, but it does the job perfectly. He is a pleasure to work with and has a lot to do with the progress our team has made. I hope this progress continues in the coming years.
Overall, I think our team is the strongest in the championship! (laughs) Although I don’t know yet how the McLaren car will perform on the Suzuka circuit, I want to believe that everything will be fine. Of course we have taken a few steps forward, but we cannot say that we have yet reached Red Bull’s level. I think they will dominate again this weekend.
Mercedes cars, for example, also work more stable than ours. In our case, the image can change in one direction or the other from track to track. On a good weekend we can perform very well, and this was especially the case at Silverstone. But overall, I think Mercedes is probably in second place in the rankings of the best cars of the season. Ferrari is in third place, and behind them we are.
We continue to make progress, but Suzuka is very different to the Singapore circuit, so we still need to analyze how the new products presented at the previous stage will perform this weekend.”
