Piastri: Confidence in the future is always good

On Wednesday, the McLaren team confirmed that Oscar Piastri’s contract has been extended until the end of 2026, and naturally the conversation with the Australian driver started at the FIA press conference in Suzuka on this subject.

Oscar Piastri: “I am of course very happy that this has already been announced. Initially it was assumed that I would continue driving for McLaren next year, but now the contract has been extended until the end of 2026, which is great!

It is nice that there is clarity about my long-term future and I look forward to continuing to work with our team. When you have confidence in the future, that’s always good, so of course it made sense for me to extend the contract, and also for the team. Such long-term planning speaks of mutual trust.

This is my first time in Japan, I like it here, I have already visited Tokyo, it was a very interesting experience, and yesterday I arrived in Suzuka, which of course is different from the capital. I studied Japanese in school for three or four years, but that was probably ten years ago and I don’t remember much.

Even if it was just something very simple: Arigato gozaimasu! (“Thank you!”) I may remember a few words, but not enough to speak this language.

And I’m very excited to finally join Suzuki because I’ve heard so much about this track. Of course I watched the races that took place here on TV as they were shown at a very opportune time in Australia. Also when I played racing simulators I often chose this track, and it was fun, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s training.

My manager, Mark Webber, gave me this advice: “Train your neck first, which will come in handy in the first sector of the lap.” In general, of course, there are many factors to take into account. For example, the wind can strongly influence the behavior of the car, especially in fast corners. In addition, the race is long, the tires work under a lot of load, this is also important, but first of all the load affects the neck muscles.”
