Honda’s US subsidiary will join the F1 programme

Honda Performance Development (HPD), based in California, will change its name to Honda Racing Corporation US from January 1 next year to join the Japanese group’s factory program in global motorsport.

HPD was founded 30 years ago to provide factory support for Honda’s then-new project to supply engines to American IndyCar Series teams, but the changes coming to the company will go beyond just changing the name.

“With these changes, Honda Racing Corporation US (HRS US) will play an important role in Honda’s global operations, including its contribution to the company’s Formula 1 program,” HRC said in a statement. “Honda’s two independent divisions, working together globally under the HRC umbrella, will combine their unique expertise and resources to strengthen Honda’s motorsports capabilities.”

“Our goal is to strengthen the HRC brand and continue our successful racing program,” said Koiji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation. “We believe that uniting Honda’s racing divisions into one organization will help achieve this. Together, our American and Japanese racing engineers will be stronger, and I am excited to welcome our American colleagues to the HRC team.”

In the near future, Honda will have to ensure the debut of the Acura ARX-06 IMSA GTP hybrid sports prototype in the World Endurance Championship – this will be one of the first joint projects of the two HRC divisions. In the future, Californian motorists will participate in the return of the Japanese concern to Formula 1 as a partner of the Aston Martin team, scheduled for 2026.
