Friday in Suzuka was not the best for Mercedes…
George Russel (5th): “I’m happy to be able to ride in Suzuka again. Great track.
Friday went a bit strange. In the first practice there was not enough grip on the track, the car slid a lot, which is very unpleasant for the drivers, especially on a track with many bends. The race on Sunday will certainly be interesting due to the high tire wear.
If we talk about the balance of power, it seems that Red Bull has returned to their usual form and is once again leading the protocol. Today they were exceptionally fast and we lost to the Ferrari and McLaren drivers of Lando Norris. We must work to close this gap.
Normally we manage to improve on Saturdays, so we are optimistic about tomorrow.”
Lewis Hamilton (14th): “Difficult day. I had no confidence in the car, which added to the problems. It turned out to be difficult to find the optimal balance, the tires overheated and I fell far behind in the protocol.
We have to work to make progress tomorrow, but I believe we will improve. We’ve already had Fridays like this this season and on Saturday we got back into better shape.”
