McLaren CEO Zak Brown is very pleased with his drivers, with Oscar Piastri starting on the front row at Suzuka and his teammate Lando Norris in third.
Zac Brown: “It was a great performance and I’m really happy. Oscar and Lando are excellent drivers and we have had a lot of confidence in them since the start of the weekend. It is clear that they are managing to get the most out of the car that McLaren has built for them.
The MCL60 is capable of high speeds, but we will go further and see if we can overtake Max. Mercedes gives us excellent power units, although I have no doubt that engines from all manufacturers are now about the same level.
Oscar is performing excellently and that is why we have extended his contract for another three years. We have an incredibly strong team, a truly united team, and Andrea Stella leads this very effectively. Because everyone does their job very well, the results gradually increase.
But I always try to remain cautiously optimistic, so since the beginning of the year I prefer to set tasks for the team every day that we can realistically accomplish. Either way, everyone at McLaren deserves credit for the work they do.
I have no doubt that by the end of the season we will be quite capable of overtaking the Aston Martin team, which currently occupies fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship. To do this we have to be as competitive as possible every weekend and try to stay ahead of Fernando Alonso, which is not that easy. Regardless, as long as there is a mathematical chance of overtaking your opponents, you should keep attacking.
I think that in tomorrow’s race we can maintain the positions from which we start – it seems that the degradation of the rubber is at a relatively low level. It would of course be great to get ahead of Max Verstappen at the start and force him to work hard over the Grand Prix distance, but I think both our drivers are perfectly capable of reaching the podium. And I’m willing to pay for a plane ticket for Oscar’s mother so she can fly to the race! It would be great for the whole Piastri family!”
