Alpine F1 technical director Pat Fry summed up the Canadian round and spoke about the challenges at Silverstone…
Q: What difficulties do you associate Silverstone with?
Pat Fry: This is a fantastic Formula 1 circuit, most of the corners, especially Copse, Maggotts and Becketts, are passed at high speed, impressing drivers and spectators. In the first races of the season the A522 was only better in fast corners, but we tried to narrow the gap by achieving optimal balance.
The most important factor at Silverstone is often the weather, but in the rain and on a dry track we have to be competitive.
Q: The team has prepared new items for the British Grand Prix?
Pat Fry: Everyone at the Enstone base has been hard at work preparing major upgrades, including a new bottom and exterior. The team has put in a lot of effort – we have to thank everyone involved in this process.
Q: How does the team feel about starting from the front row in Canada and finishing in the top ten in the final race?
Pat Fry: It’s great that we earned ten points in Canada, but the most important task now is to ensure the reliability of the car. Unfortunately, Fernando had two reliability issues in the race – one affecting the engine and the other – the suspension, which prevented him from fighting for the podium in the race after a great qualifying.
The second problem speeds up tire pellet formation, plus VSC mode failure – the result doesn’t reflect what was possible at the finish.
In previous races we have made steady progress, now we need to use it effectively to reach our goal.
