Fernando Alonso has been successful several times at Silverstone and this week he hopes to score points for the fifth race in a row…
Q: How do you rate the results of the Canadian Grand Prix?
Fernando Alonso: It’s nice to get some points, although seventh, and after the penalty – ninth place, was not our goal at the start of the weekend.
We didn’t expect to qualify this high – I showed it the second time and started from the front row. I am happy with my performance in qualifying in difficult weather conditions.
The race did not go as we expected. The virtual safety car took us out of the fight with rivals, and some of them added.
The pace was good in the first part of the race, but then there was a leak in the pneumatic system and I lost engine power on the straights. At Silverstone it is important to achieve greater efficiency and reliability.
Q: What do you like to race at Silverstone?
Fernando Alonso: This is a classic circuit where I have achieved many podiums, pole positions and victories. Silverstone is a real race track, where the fight is often interesting.
The weather is also unpredictable – in some years it is very hot and sometimes there is heavy rain with strong winds. But whatever the weather, the weekend is sure to be interesting.
Q: The middle of the season is approaching, how do you rate the results of the first nine Grand Prix?
Fernando Alonso: The season is still unclear to me. It seems we are consistently in the top ten, and sometimes a bit higher, especially in terms of speed on a fast lap, but no luck in the races. We’ve had reliability issues, bad safety car rides and incidents. We couldn’t use many moments to our advantage.
However, the team is working well and the engineers at the base are working hard on finalizing the machines. If we make progress and increase reliability, we’ll be in better shape. We have a lot of interesting things ahead of us, it’s clear that our car has potential – I’m looking forward to learning what to expect in the next races.
