Williams double retirement at Suzuka

The Japanese Grand Prix ended with a double retirement for the Williams team: the cars of Alex Albon and Logan Sargent were damaged in collisions with rivals. Valtteri Bottas collided with Albon at the start, while Sargent himself crashed into the Finnish Alfa Romeo driver a few laps later. Logan received two penalty points for this.

Alex Albon (meeting): “There are not such strong cars that can withstand such a collision. A bad start set off a further chain of events – I was at the wrong time and in the wrong place – they simply crashed into me. We have to work at the beginning. On the first lap the car suffered serious damage and unfortunately the race ended for me.

I stayed on track to see how things would develop, but the damaged car made it impossible to fight, so I had to get off.”

Logan Sargent (retreat): “The first few rounds were exciting. I came out of the pit lane and saw a lot of debris on the track, so I was afraid of a flat tire.

Regarding the incident with Valtteri Bottas in Turn 11, as soon as I pressed the brake pedal, the wheels immediately locked. My fault, and Valtteri probably didn’t see me blocking the wheels and trying to perform his maneuver.

Unfortunately I had to get off after the collision. Too bad, because our car had a good pace on this track, especially in qualifying. As a result, we didn’t reach the finish line. The team will put the weekend behind us and concentrate on preparing for the stage in Qatar.”
