On the eve of the British Grand Prix, Ferrari’s press service asked racing strategist Ravin Jain to talk about the features of the circuit at Silverstone…
Q: What can you tell us about Silverstone’s features?
Rabbi Jain: Silverstone has a very technical and fast track with quick changes of direction – for example in the famous Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel connection – one of the fastest on the Formula 1 calendar.
The high-speed character and the lack of a large number of slow corners mean that Silverstone has a minimal load on the brakes. The track is in the English outback with minimal elevation gain, but the open terrain means the wind can affect the car’s balance during the lap.
Three years ago, the tarmac was redone – it’s slippery, but has a lot of grip, so riders can attack as much as possible.
Q: What tasks do strategists have to solve at the British Grand Prix?
Rabbi Jain: Pirelli will bring the strongest trio of C1, C2 and C3 compounds to Silverstone due to the fast-paced nature of the racing. However, we expect tire degradation to play a major role in the number of pit stops on Sunday.
Thanks to the unique pit lane entry, the driver cuts the last corners, so that the loss of time in the pit stop is relatively small. This fact, combined with the two DRS zones and overtaking opportunities, gives many possible strategic options for the race.
The British summer is known for its erratic weather, so we can see both rain and shine over the race weekend. Teams and strategists must be alert to respond to changing weather.
Q: You are a young British engineer working for a legendary Italian team. What does this weekend mean to you personally?
Rabbi Jain: I am proud to work at Ferrari, but in our team members from many countries work together. For me, the return to Silverstone is special because I saw a Formula 1 car here for the first time many years ago.
Ferrari has a rich history of working with the British – the first British World Champion, Mike Hawthorne, won the title with the Scuderia. I am proud that my name is now in the long list of racers and engineers. Suffice it to say that this Sunday I will be delighted to hear the Italian national anthem on stage!
