Hamilton may not be allowed to race at the British Grand Prix this weekend due to the FIA’s tough stance on drivers wearing jewelry behind the wheel. The 37-year-old is known to regularly wear jewelry while racing and has expressed his disagreement with the FIA’s decision to stand firm on the issue this season.
Hamilton was forced to remove his earrings at the Miami Grand Prix earlier this year, but he claimed he was unable to remove the piercing from his nose because the hole had closed to the point that it was impossible to remove it. The FIA has given him a deadline to resolve the issue which expires on Thursday, meaning he could be banned from competing at Silverstone if he does not comply.
Initially, the Mercedes driver was granted a postponement of two Grands Prix, after which it was extended.
If Hamilton decides not to remove his nose piercing, at worst he will be banned from racing until he can remove his jewelry.
However, a number of alternative options will be available to stewards, including reprimands or fines.
Hamilton is not the only driver on the Formula 1 grid to wear jewelry regularly, but he is certainly the most famous, and many observers have suggested he was the target of the harsh FIA rule, which exists For almost 20 years. Lewis recently criticized the organisation’s stance on drivers wearing jewellery, saying it was an overstatement, before admitting he would be willing to reach a compromise that works for all parties.
