“I went through blood, sweat and tears to get here.” For the first time in five years, a woman is testing a Formula 1 car.

British driver Jessica Hawkins completed a test session behind the wheel “Aston Martin” becoming the first woman in five years to drive a modern Formula 1 car.

The 28-year-old athlete took part in the team’s tests in Budapest. The Briton spent several races in the 2021 AMR21 car alternating with Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich.

“I went through blood, sweat and tears to get here. When I first heard it was possible, I couldn’t believe it. I had to keep it a secret for several months, which was very hard! But it was worth it.

Nothing beats the acceleration and braking of a Formula 1 car, and after studying the data, I’m really proud of my performance. Getting behind the wheel of an AMR21 is a dream that I have wanted to make come true for a long time. “I will strive to do more, and in doing so, I want to inspire other women and let them know that they should follow their dreams,” the team’s press office quotes Hawkins.

The team noted that part of the tests were carried out in rainy conditions, but the girl followed the work schedule and collected all the necessary data for Aston Martin. Hawkins joined the team in 2021 as an ambassador driver.

Until now, the last woman to drive a Formula 1 car was Tatiana Calderon, who tested for the Sauber team in 2018.
