Fernando Alonso does not hide his emotions during radio conversations with the team. Everyone remembers his expression ‘GP2 engine’, referring to Honda engines when he played for McLaren.
During the Suzuka race, the Spaniard criticized the team for an early pit stop, and after the finish he said that all his quotes had been taken out of context and that Formula 1 used them to his advantage.
Fernando Alonso: “Phrases from the negotiations are classic ‘radio FOM’, when words are taken out of context.
I don’t know what other drivers say when they’re behind a slower car and can’t overtake it even with DRS. Maybe they say, “I’m fine, I like to ride behind,” but I prefer to overtake. In Suzuka I was slower, even with DRS open.
After the first pit stop I criticized the team for being too early. I was behind Ferrari and in front of Hamilton when the team called me to the pits on lap 12 to protect me from a possible undercut from Tsunoda. It was unexpected.
Maybe it was a mistake, but now it’s easy to talk about it. I don’t think I could have finished higher than eighth place behind the leading teams anyway, so the early pit stop didn’t really affect the race.”
