Max Verstappen’s father Jos has been involved in his son’s career for a long time, but now it no longer requires his attention. Jos returned to racing, sometimes winning stages of the Belgian Rally Championship, but is not yet ready to move to the WRC. In an interview with Dutch Formula 1 he spoke about his feelings.
Jos Verstappen: “When I helped Max, I also felt adrenaline, but now he has reached a level where he no longer needs my help, and I decided to have fun. It’s boring without adrenaline.
The feeling of participating in a race cannot be compared to what you feel when you watch the races from the sidelines. This is completely different. No, racing is not more interesting. Watching Max is just as exciting as racing yourself. And I was always more satisfied with his victories than with my own. But the best part is when Max wins in a Formula 1 car and I win in a rally car. This is our goal now.
I think that in a year or two I can compete at the highest level in the Belgian championships, but I will not make it to the World Cup. I enjoy watching the WRC, but I have no ambitions in that direction. Last year I did the WRC rally in Ypres one day, it lasted a whole week and I regretted being away from home for so long. I’m happy with how things are going now.”
